No Calculated Fields in Freehand SQL Views
Question Asked
Hi,

I've noticed that calculated fields are not available in free hand SQL views.

I sort of have an idea as to why but what is the reason?

Hi Nick,

At the moment it is not possible to have calculated fields available in freehand SQL views because the current architecture doesn't support it insofar as the code that is entered in the 1st screen is, in fact, the definition of the view and can't be added to at the 2nd screen.

It certainly wouldn't be impossible to change the current design so that the calculated fields became available, however, the main reason why this hasn't been done is that if the user has chosen to create a Freehand SQL View then they could easily incorporate their calculated fields within their SQL query.

Hi David,

Thanks for the feedback. The reason why I asked is because I wanted to change a field from a dimension to a metric.

The columns in the view are all dimension to start.

In my report, I want to apply an aggregation function on a field in the metric part of a cross tab. You can't do this a dimension.

Any ideas?

Hi Dave, your comment would be accurate except that I want to create a calculted field on the aggregate of columns (e.g. sum(x)/sum(y) ) How can I do that with free hand sql?

Hi guest,

if you have a freehand sql view, then you could perform the calculation on the aggregate of columns by creating a calculated field at the report-level rather than at view-level.
